In a world of competing information and a wide variety of options, it’s hard to get back to the basics of overall wellness. Fortunately, we’ve come up with an easy 4-step plan to incorporate into your daily life to help create a foundation to support your body and help you feel your best:
STEP 1 – START EACH DAY RIGHT
Benjamin Franklin’s popular “Early to bed, early to rise” adage carries an importance often overlooked. Did you know that getting up just 30 minutes earlier than usual can help jumpstart your day’s productivity and organization? In addition to waking up early, starting the day off with a glass of water and a simple exercise routine can provide your body with more energy than a cup of morning coffee. Also, daily morning exercise has been proven to help boost your metabolism. It also helps lower both your blood pressure and chance of heart disease. Treating your body to those “feel good” endorphins right at the start of the day helps start each day right.
STEP 2 – BRING MINDFULNESS TO YOUR ACTIVITIES
Bringing mindfulness to whatever activity you’re doing has wonderful health benefits. Whether these activities are active or restful, it’s important to support them with a strong foundation of intention and planning.
Mindfulness in Action
Our bodies are designed and built to move and be active. While many people have sedentary jobs, that doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead and avoid the risks that come with that type of work. Take the time to map out your average week and identify time blocks when you can move. Don’t see a lot of opportunities? Get creative!
Mindfulness in Rest
Be deliberate in your rest – give yourself time to cool down at the end of every exercise period. Also, be sure to put your phone away at least 30 minutes before bedtime. The blue light from phone screens has been known to mess with your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.
STEP 3 – EAT WELL INSTEAD OF EATING OUT
While fast food is certainly convenient, it contains over-processed, fatty, unhealthy options. This, in turn, slows the body down and slowly deteriorates its wellness foundation. Our goal should be to eat well instead of eating out. This all starts with achieving a healthy gut. A healthy gut contains probiotics which maintain the balance for your entire body, including your nervous system. Therefore, improving your gut can help improve your mood, mental clarity, blood sugar, and hormone balance. Gut health is as much about avoiding irritants as it is about eating well. In addition, you should eat a lot of fiber from vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit, and legumes.
