Healthy Food Terms Defined

Many questions arise when it comes to healthy living and whole food products. Often, terminology and what you can say regarding wholesome plant foods, functional foods, and dietary supplements can be confusing. Let’s dive into the definitions of these frequently used terms:

WHOLESOME PLANT FOODS

Wholesome plant foods refer to minimally processed, plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. These foods are rich in essential nutrients and form the basis of a healthy diet.

E. EXCEL’s botanical beverages and capsules are synergistically formulated from wholesome plant foods.

FUNCTIONAL FOODS

Functional foods are foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition. These food items are typically similar in appearance to conventional foods and are consumed as part of a regular diet.

Evernew and Nutrifresh are good examples of functional foods. For example, Evernew‘s marketing statement reads, “One packet of Evernew provides 6 grams of fiber, including 3 grams of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber from foods such as psyllium husk found in Evernew, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. One packet of Evernew provides 3 grams of soluble fiber from fruits and grains.” This statement describes how whole food ingredients found in the product may have an effect on health beyond basic nutrition.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

Dietary supplements are products taken orally that contain dietary ingredients intended to supplement the diet. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and enzymes, and they usually come in forms such as capsules, tablets, liquids, or powders.

All of E. EXCEL’s capsules and a select group of botanical beverages fall into this category. As such, all capsules and a select group of botanical beverages must include an FDA statement. Here’s an example of an acceptable marketing statement: “NOCO helps support the respiratory and immune systems.*”
