Supporting Cardiovascular Functions

The body’s cardiovascular system includes the heart, which is a muscular pumping device, and a closed system of vessels called arteries, veins, and capillaries. The heart and vessels work together intricately to provide adequate blood flow to all parts of the body; therefore, it is essential to provide the body with proper cardiovascular support.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM FUNCTIONS

There are four major functions to the cardiovascular system:

  • To transport nutrients, gases, and waste products around the body

The cardiovascular system acts as a courier to deliver and expel nutrients, gases, and waste products throughout the body. Nutrients are delivered from the digestive tract to the muscles and organs that require them for energy. Hormones from endocrine glands are transported by the cardiovascular system to their target organs. Waste products are transported to the lungs or urinary system to be expelled from the body.

  • To protect the body from infection and blood loss

Blood contains three types of cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen around the body to the tissues and organs that need it. White blood cells detect foreign bodies or infections, envelop and eliminate them. Platelets are cells which are responsible for clotting the blood. They stick to foreign particles or objects such as the edges of a cut.

  • To help the body maintain a constant body temperature

The process of temperature regulation, known as thermoregulation, and the cardiovascular system play an integral part. Temperature changes within the body are detected by sensory receptors called thermoreceptors. These, in turn, relay information about changes to the hypothalamus in the brain. When a deviation in temperature is recorded, the hypothalamus initiates certain mechanisms to regain a safe temperature range.

  • To help maintain fluid balance within the body

The cardiovascular system works in conjunction with other body systems (nervous and endocrine) to balance the body’s fluid levels.  Fluid balance ensures efficient movement of electrolytes, nutrients, and gases through the body’s cells.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM AND NUTRITION

A wide variety of whole foods and phytonutrients can help assist the body while dealing with the challenges of everyday life, such as: not enough exercise, over consumption of unhealthy processed foods, high stress levels, and lack of rest and relaxation. Whole food ingredients such as Chinese hawthorn, chrysanthemum, peach seed and blueberries can have a positive effect on maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. For example, Chinese hawthorn has shown to have pharmacological properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects as well as reduction of smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation. In other words, this tiny fruit has many health promoting properties.*
